Where is my meter?

Most water meters are outside near your outside stop tap. It’s usually under a small metal or plastic cover in your driveway, garden, or the footpath nearby. Sometimes it can be a bit further down the road.

If your meter is indoors, it’s usually under the kitchen sink by your inside stop tap. Sometimes meters are in basements or garages. You can check you have the right meter by matching the serial number to the one on your bill.

Sometimes, outside meters are in shared pits, not individual ones. The covers for these can be heavy, so please don’t try to read them yourself. Wait for your scheduled reading or contact us if you’re worried about your bill.

If your meter looks broken or damaged, please contact us.

How do I read my meter?

Watch our short video to learn how to read your meter.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to read your meter:

1. Open your meter chamber, remove the polystyrene on top of the meter and any surface water inside.

2. To check you’re looking at the right meter, turn your outside stop tap off and turn on a tap inside. If no water comes out of your inside tap, you’ve got the right meter.

3. Turn the water back on at the meter and make a note of the meter reading.

4. Don't use any water for the next 30 minutes and then take a reading. If the reading has changed, there's water escaping from somewhere.

5. To find out where the water is escaping without using any water, turn the water off at the inside stop tap. Wait 30 minutes to an hour, then take another meter reading. A change in the reading could mean water is escaping outside. If there’s no change, it indicates water is escaping inside.

6. If your water meter reading hasn’t changed during these checks, there are no leaks.

7. If you find a leak, contact a local plumber to repair it as soon as possible. You can find a list of approved plumbers here.
