Key facts
Location: Glebe Close, Smarden
Work: Replacing 150 metres of water main
Starts: Monday 4 August
Duration: Approx. six weeks
Investment: £147,000
We're planning to replace an ageing, burst-prone water main in Glebe Close, Smarden.
The water pipes in Glebe Close have burst 17 times in the last five years. This has meant low water pressure and sometimes no water for our customers in the area.
We’re always working to reduce the number of leaks and bursts we have. To make the water supply in this area more reliable, we’re going to replace around 150 metres of water pipes in Glebe Close.
When will work start, and how long will it take?
We’ll be starting work on Monday 4 August.
We expect the work to take approximately six weeks. We’ll do our best to get the work done faster if we can.
We’ll be working in short sections starting at the junction with The Street, along Glebe Close. We’ll branch to the left first, and then back to the right.
Working hours
To minimise disruption for residents, our team will be working Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4:00pm. When they leave the site each day, they’ll make the working area safe to cross allowing residents vehicular access to their property each evening and over the weekend.
Temporary traffic lights at the junction of Glebe Close and The Street
Towards the end of the project, we'll also need temporary traffic lights on The Street as we connect to the existing network.
This webpage will be updated as work progresses.
FAQs
We do all we can to minimise disruption to the community when laying new water mains and always look to install pipes in locations which will cause the least disruption, such as grass verges and when in a road, as close to the verge as possible.
In the case of Glebe Close, we know how narrow the road is and have spoken to residents ahead of work starting to find out what the key concerns are, and how we can alleviate them. We’re asking residents who park on the road to park elsewhere for the duration of the works or minimise vehicular movement to and from Glebe Close if they have driveways.
We’ll be making the road safe to pass outside of the working hours stated on this webpage.
Residents will still be able to access their property, but our team will have to make the working area safe to cross each time. The more often they have to stop work to do this, the more likely it is that the project will be delayed.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
As with all our roadworks, we always maintain access for emergency services. Emergency services are briefed well in advance. Our team will work as quickly as possible to make working areas safe for emergency vehicles to cross.
Bin collections and postal deliveries will still be able to access properties for the duration of our work. We advise of these services of our works and it is up to these providers to ensure that their services can continue during our works. Our on-site team will work with providers.
As the work will require connections to the existing network, there will be a short interruption in supply. We will notify you well in advance when this is due to happen if you are impacted by a loss of supply.
