Apprenticeships are a great way to kick-start your career and gain real-world experience.
Whether you’re just leaving school, finishing college or looking for a change of career, there are lots of exciting opportunities out there.
Here, Leakage Apprentice Leah Thomas shares her experience of life at South East Water and why she chose to go down the apprenticeship route.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship?
After more than nine years working with both the Thames Valley and Met Police, I was looking for a change of role in a completely new field. I’ve always liked taking things apart and enjoyed plumbing, so I thought this would be a perfect chance for me to turn my hobbies into a new career.
My apprenticeship is spread over two years. Most of that time will be spent shadowing experienced leakage technicians and learning the tricks of the trade. I also get to spend a few days a month studying at a local college. I love the fact I get to earn while I learn and get stuck into the role right from the start.
What do you like about working for South East Water?
I love how friendly and approachable everyone at the company is. I work closely with other members of the Leakage Team and they’re always really helpful and willing to explain the process to you in detail.
There are also plenty of training courses available to help you learn new skills and progress in your career.
Everyone needs water, and it’s always something that’s going to be around. I think the water industry is a great area to work in and I love knowing that I’m part of a team that helps supply people with one of life’s most precious resources.
How easy did you find it to apply for an apprenticeship?
At the time I was looking for a plumbing apprenticeship and found the South East Water opportunity while searching online.
Due to my age I wasn’t sure whether I’d be considered, however when I was then invited in for an assessment day I found that a lot of the other applicants were also older and looking for a change of career. The day was really laid back and I didn’t feel like I was under any pressure. We had a casual chat with members of staff, and I never felt like I was being put on the spot. It was really different to any job interview I’d had before, and I got to meet some great people.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
I’d love to be a fully qualified member of the Leakage Team working my way up the career ladder. I think it’s important to keep increasing my knowledge and learning new skills, and I can’t wait to see where this opportunity will take me.
Any top tips for people looking to do an apprenticeship?
