Work on a scheme to install two new water mains, each approximately 650 metres in length, is underway along Walshes Road and Stone Cross Road between Luxford Road and Alice Bright Lane.
The project is expected to take approximately 34 weeks to complete but our contractor will work hard to complete the work sooner.
We are using open cut techniques to install pipes within the same trench. Construction work is being carried out in stages, with the road being returned to its original state upon completion of one section before the work moves along to the next stage.
As a safety precaution for pedestrians, motorists and our contractor we have closed Stone Cross Road to through traffic only while we carry out our work. Also, temporary traffic lights will be used along Walshes Road to enable motorists to use the road while work takes place.
A diversion route, which has been agreed in conjunction with the East Sussex Highways, will be clearly signed for the duration of the work. We will be phasing the road closure so that only one section of Stone Cross Road will be closed at a time, starting at Fermor Road and finishing in between Alderbrook Close and Alice Bright Lane.
Customers will be able to access their homes and businesses throughout this project although there may be a short wait at times if we are working outside a property entrance.
Work is taking place between 07:00 - 19:00 from Monday to Friday.
There may be a short interruption to the water supply as we connect our new pipe to the existing network but we will write to customers at least 48 hours in advance if this is going to happen.
Our contractor is Clancy Docwra and if you have any concerns during the work, the staff on site will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have. If you would like to speak to South East Water direct please call our Customer Technical Centre on 0333 000 1100.
Update 9 March:
We are now finishing the reinstatement works in the road and will be connecting the main to the existing network as we were unable to last week. Once this is complete we will return in July for the second phase.
Update 3 March:
Today we will be completing the final connection of the new water main to the existing network after connecting all customers' supplies to the new pipe last week. We anticipate to be out of the road by the end of this week and will be returning in the summer.
Update 24 February:
We laid the last 24 metres of new main for this section of our project, we will be returning in the summer to lay the final 220 metres. We have 10 customer supply pipes left to connect to the new main and there will be another connection on 3 March.
Update 10 February, 2020
We will be connecting the new pipe to our network along Stone Cross Road, between the southern entrance of Alderbrook Close and Alice Bright Lane, from 11pm on Tuesday 18 February until 4am Wendesday 19 February.
Due to the nature of this work, there may be some noise from the use of equipment but please be assured our contractors have been instructed to keep any noise to an absolute minimum.
Update 27 January, 2020
We have laid 358 metres of the pipe and have transferred 14 properties onto the new main.
Update 14 November, 2019
We have now laid and tested 240 metres of the first new main and also laid 240 metres of the second main in Stone Cross Road. We will be connecting services to the new pipes at a later date.
Update 3 October, 2019
We have now laid the first 70 metres of replacement water main under the road closure in Stone Cross Road.
Update 24 September, 2019
The traffic lights have been removed at the junction of Stone Cross Road and Fermor Road. We are now working under a road closure in Stone Cross Road where we are excavating trial holes to establish ground conditions before progressing the work.
Update 12 September, 2019
We are currently working under three way traffic light control at the junction of Stone Cross Road and Fermor Road. Once this work is completed we will then move further along Stone Cross Road under a road closure with a route diversion is force. We will return to the section of work in Walshes Road at a later date as it has been established that due to the narrow width of the road, and the situation of the utilities in the middle of the carriageway, that it is not possible to undertake our construction under traffic light control. The work will require a full road closure and we are in the process of applying for a road closure permit from East Sussex Highways. We will provide an update on the timing of this closure when more information is known.
Update 29 August, 2019
Work on this scheme is progressing well. We have completed a meter bypass and work will move along Stone Cross Road next week. Two-way traffic lights remain in operation. We would like to thank residents, motorists and local businesses for their patience and understanding while work continues.
Update 20 January, 2020
To date we have 80 metres of main left to lay. We have flushed and taken samples at Stonecross Road and we are prepping services to be connected this week.
