South East Water has a major investment programme in new and replacement infrastructure aimed at overcoming problems caused by old and unreliable water mains, preventing burst pipes and improving the resilience of the system.

Previous issues have included bursts in your area and we are keen to take action now to replace the old water main that runs along these roads. We want to reduce the risk of any future incidents which can result in an interruption to the water supply in the area.

Therefore, work on the scheme to install a new water main, approximately 3.4 kilometres in length, will take place along Brightling Road, Hollingrove Road and Cackle Street starting in May 2019.

How can we ensure this work is done with minimum disruption to you?

We are to use an underground directional drilling technique to install this pipe. This involves excavating a series of pits where the new pipe will run and drilling the new pipe underground. This will minimise the amount of excavation works required as opposed to traditional trenching techniques.

As a safety precaution for pedestrians, motorists and our contractor we will need to close Brightling Road, Hollingrove Road and Cackle Street to through traffic only but road closures will be phased to minimise disruption. The diversion routes, which have been agreed in conjunction with the East Sussex County Council Highways department, will be clearly signed for the duration of the work.

You will be able to access your home or business throughout this project though there may be a short wait at times if we are working outside your property entrance. Where possible, we advise parking elsewhere to avoid delays, otherwise there may be a short delay while our workers make the area safe for you.

When is the work due to start?

Construction started on 7 May 2019 and the project is expected to take approximately 38 weeks to complete but our contractor’s staff will work hard to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible.

Work will take place during normal working hours, although there may be some activities at weekends.

There may be a short interruption to your water supply during this scheme as we connect our new pipe to the existing network but we will give you at least 48 hours notice if this is going to happen.

Who can I contact if I have any queries about these works?

Our contractor is Clancy Docwra and if you have any concerns during the work staff on site will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you may have. If you would like to speak to South East Water direct please call our Customer Technical Centre on 0333 000 1100 .

Progress updates

23 October, 2019

We are on course to complete this engineering project on Saturday of this week, three months ahead of schedule when the road is due to be re-opened. We are grateful to the local community for the cooperation received throughout this important scheme.

9 October, 2019

Our engineering scheme to replace approximately 3.4 kilometres of burst-prone water pipe is nearing completion, with work now taking place to lay a new water main in Cackle Street. As part of this, we need to connect the new pipe to our network near the junction between Cackle Street and Battle Road.

This involves shutting a section of the old water main and draining it before connecting the new water main and refilling the system.

The work will take place overnight from 11pm on Thursday 17 October to 2am on Friday 18 October, you may experience no water or low pressure during this time.

Once water supplies return to normal, you may experience a slight discolouration or air in your water supply. This is normal following an interruption to supply and you simply need to run your cold water tap in your kitchen until the water runs clear.

Due to the nature of this work, there may be some minor noise from the use of equipment but please be assured that our contractors will keep any noise to an absolute minimum.

3 October, 2019

While we are currently reinstating work already carried out at Cackle Street, we have a further 200 metres of new pipeline to lay by the open cut trenching method. Customers are also reminded of the information given below about the overnight connection work taking place next week on Tuesday 8 October.

24 September, 2019

Last week we laid a further 100 metres of new water main at Cackle Street with 300 metres left to go. Three kilometres of new pipeline has now been commissioned.

12 September, 2019

We are currently working on a 500 metre section in Cackle Street from the culvert bridge towards the closed Hollingrove Road junction. To date, we have laid 3km of new water main. Once the remaining pipework is laid, we will test this section and transfer the final customer services to the new main. The project is progressing well and is currently ahead of schedule.

29 August, 2019

Good progress continues to be made with the latest phase of this project. After encountering hard ground we have had to use traditional open cut techniques along a 200m section but we have already completed 135m of the open cut and we are pleased with progress to date. Hollingrove Road remains closed with access for local residents and businesses. We would like to thank local residents, businesses and motorists for their patience and understanding while we carry out this important work.

11 July, 2019

Engineering work at the Brightling Road section of this scheme is now complete and the road has been reinstated. We started work on the next section of this project at Hollingrove Road on Monday (8 July) where 590 metres of new pipeline will be installed.

29 May, 2019

Our work in Brightling Road has gone well to date and we are ahead of schedule. We anticipate being able to connect the new section of water main here to our network tomorrow night before we then start to reinstate the road surface over the next few days. Preparations will then begin for the next section of the project in Hollingrove Road which is due to commence around 10 June.

10 May, 2019

Our engineering scheme to replace approximately 3.4km of burst-prone water pipe has began, with work now taking place to lay a new water main in Rectory Hill.

As part of this, we need to connect the new pipe to our network near the British Gypsum conveyor belt within Rectory Hill.

This involves shutting a section of the old water main and draining it before connecting the new water main and refilling the system.

You may experience no water or low pressure during this work, which will take place overnight from 11pm on Tuesday 14 May to 2am on Wednesday 15 May.

Once water supplies return to normal, you may experience a slight discolouration or air in your water supply. This is normal following an interruption to supply and you simply need to run your cold water tap in your kitchen until the water runs clear.
