Burgess Hill water main replacement scheme enters final phase

Work will begin on the final phase of a £445,000 scheme to replace 800 metres of burst-prone water mains in Burgess Hill on 30 September.

Phase three of the replacement scheme in London Road and Cromwell Road is expected to last for eight weeks. The final phase will involve the laying of 175 metres of pipe in Cromwell Road.

Jeremy Dufour, Project Manager at South East water, said: “The first two phases of this scheme have been successfully completed on schedule. We have worked closely with West Sussex Highways to work out how to do this work with as little disruption as possible but for safety reasons Cromwell Road will need to be closed from its junctions with Fairfield Road and London Road for the final phase.

“Other traffic management measures, including temporary traffic lights, may need to be used at times, particularly when we install the pipe across London Road. We will of course ensure that we maintain access to homes and businesses throughout the work. South East Water customers have been sent letters containing more information about the work and we appreciate the patience and cooperation of local residents, businesses and motorists while we complete this scheme.”

Diversion routes have been agreed by West Sussex Highways and will be clearly signposted for the duration of the works.

The first 2 phases consisted of:

  • Phase 1 – Burgess Hill Rugby Club, Woodpecker Crescent to Southway Road Cycle path and Southway Rd to a point adjacent the Southway Junior School.
  • Phase 2 – Southway Rd (adjacent Southway Junior School), Weald Rd to the verge of Royal George Rd (adjacent the pedestrian access to the Royal George Recreation Ground).

Work will take place during normal working hours, although there may be some activities at weekends or at night.

There may be a short interruption to your water supply during this scheme as we connect our new pipe to the existing network. However we will write to you at least 48 hours in advance of this taking place.

Update 5 September, 2019

The third and final phase of this scheme is set to start on 30 September and is expected to last for eight weeks. The final phase will involve the laying of 175 metres of pipe in Cromwell Road. For safety reasons Cromwell Road will need to be closed from its junctions with Fairfield Road and London Road for the final phase. Other traffic management measures, including temporary traffic lights, may need to be used at times, particularly when we install the pipe across London Road. We will of course ensure that we maintain access to homes and businesses throughout the work. South East Water customers have been sent letters containing more information about the work and we appreciate the patience and cooperation of local residents, businesses and motorists while we complete this scheme.

Update 29 August, 2019

Phase 2 of this scheme has progressed very well and work is almost complete. We have finished all work near to the school in time for the start of the new academic year. Next week we will continue to return the area to its previous state and clear the site. Thank you to local residents, motorists and businesses for their patience and cooperation during this phase of the scheme.

Update 13 August, 2019

We are now on the final section of Phase 2 of this scheme (Weald Road from the junction with Southway to the junction with Royal George Road).

The project is going very well and we would like to thank local residents and businesses for their patience and understanding while we carry out the work.

Update 26 June, 2019

Phase 1 of our work to install the new water main at Southway is on track for completion as planned by the start of the school summer holidays. At the rugby field and the cycle path we have completed installation of the new pipe and plan to connect it to our network around 9 July after which the field and path will be reinstated.

In the carriageway at Southway, from the end of the cycle path to the school, the new pipe has also been installed and the road surface reinstated with the final connection also planned for around 9 July.

At Royal George Road, opposite Condor Way, we have installed a new valve and the work at this location is now complete.

The final connection around 9 July will bring Phase 1 live and allow us to abandon the old water main through Southway Junior School grounds.

We plan to move to Phase 2, continuing to work along Southway in the carriageway past the school into Weald Road, during the school summer holidays.

Update 6 June, 2019

Work is progressing well and we are on course to complete Phase One of the project by 23 July.

Work commences today along Southway where we will be open-cutting the road surface to excavate a trench for the new pipeline.

As we work along the road from the cycleway towards Southway Junior School, access to properties will be maintained at all times.

However, parking on the highway may be restricted within the working area and there may a short delay for residents while our contractors place steel plates across the road, or have to move construction equipment, before they can proceed on or off their driveways.

Update 29 May, 2019

Work is underway and we have already laid the new water main through the entire length of the section through the rugby field. We will be working on the cycle path section this week.
