Douglas Whitfield, South East Water Operations Director, said: “Our teams have been working tirelessly alongside specialists to make the site of our drinking water storage reservoir on Hermitage Lane, Maidstone safe, and begin surveys to understand the extent of the sinkholes on site.”

The reservoir is essentially a large concrete tank with a lid which holds treated drinking water temporarily before it goes to customers’ taps. Over the weekend South East Water has been able to reconfigure its network to bypass this tank and therefore customer water supplies are not impacted at this time.

Surveys are continuing this week following the appearance of a series of voids around the water storage tank on Friday (25 September) and Saturday (26 September).

Douglas continued: “Safety is our number one priority, therefore we switched off the tank during the weekend and re-directed water around our network of underground pipes in the town to keep customers’ taps flowing.

“We are continuing to work closely with the local authorities and update residents.”
