We're installing more than three kilometres of water mains in Finchampstead Road, Billing Avenue, Gorse Ride South and Nine Mile Ride.
You may be aware the existing pipework along Nine Mile Ride has a history of bursts and is coming to the end of its working life. Therefore, we are taking the opportunity to replace this pipe.
This project is also necessary to improve the capacity of the network and ensure we can continue to maintain water pressure to the area as the community grows.
Work began in Finchampstead Road on July 24 and the road was closed for several weeks. This section was planned during the school holidays in order to minimise disruption and is now complete.
We've now moved our working area to Nine Mile Ride, working from the junction with Gorse Ride South to the junction with Park Lane.
At the same time as this closure, we're also installing pipe in Billing Avenue and Gorse Ride South.
Due to the number of other utilities in Nine Mile Ride and for the health and safety of our workforce and the public, a road closure will be required.
We anticipate that Nine Mile Road will be closed for approximately 10 months but this will be split into smaller phases to allow sections of work to be carried out to reduce the impact to residents and businesses.
Access to homes and businesses will be maintained at all times however residents’ normal access route may need to be changed as the scheme progresses. California Country Park will remain open as normal throughout the project.
A clearly signed division route which has been agreed with Wokingham Borough Council is in place.
You can visit our social media channels (@sewateruk) or sign up for text and email alerts by visiting the In Your Area map.
The map below indicates where our contractor will be working and the three phases of the project.
Following discussions with Reading Buses, a temporary shuttle service will be in place while our contractor works along Nine Mile Ride.
During the second phase of the project, along Nine Mile Ride east of California Country Park, a shuttle bus will run between California Country Park and Sheerlands Road at Arborfield Green. You can view the timetable for these buses here.
During the third and final phase, between California Country Park and the junction of Nine Mile Ride and Park Lane, a shuttle bus will run between Hogwood Industrial Estate and Sheerlands Road. The timetable is available here.
Please note that times marked in blue are journeys to cater for school trips to Reading while journeys marked green cater for peak travel to Reading (to arrive before 9am).
Leopard Bus 3
From Monday, November 4, Reading Buses will be suspending the double-run back-and-forth between Barkham The Bull and the Barkham Ride/B3016 roundabout. Instead, this one journey will go straight on, from Langley Common Road straight up past the Bull and direct along Barkham Road to Wokingham.
Statement from Courtney Buses
Due to the road closure of Finchampstead Road at California Crossroads, Services will be diverting via Kiln Ride, Foxcote and Windsor Ride in both directions.
Customers for stops at Calfornia Crossroads on Finchampstead Road and Calfornia Post Office stop on Nine Mile Ride please use Barkham Ride bus stops in both directions.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused.
How will school buses be affected?
We’ve also been working closely with Horseman Coaches to see how we can minimise disruption to school bus services. We’re aware there are several passengers in the area which use the 244 and M04 service for Holt School, Forest School and Emmbrook School.
Changes to times and locations for these services can be found by clicking the relevant bus service number below.
23 January 2020
Residents of California Country Park are set to benefit from a temporary shuttle bus service from next month.
The service will run between California Country Park and Sheerlands Road from February 3rd.
Residents will then be able to access their normal service to travel towards Wokingham or Reading.
Timetable information is available in the bus section above.
6 January 2020
Our Customer Liaison Manager will be at California Country Park on Tuesday, January 7th, to talk to residents and businesses about the final phase of the project.
31 December 2019
We’re set to begin the third and final phase of our project to strengthen the water network in Finchampstead, Wokingham.
To minimise disruption to the public, our road closure in Nine Mile Ride was removed on December 20th.
Our contractor, Clancy Docwra, will return to site on Monday, 6th January and Nine Mile Ride will be closed between the junction of California Country Park and Park Lane.
The road closure in White Horse Lane will also be restored and our diversion route will be in place once again. You can find more information on the diversion by using the links above.
Meanwhile, the temporary bus service will continue to be in service, now going between Hogwood Industrial Estate and Sheerlands Road.
Clancy Docwra will be laying two pipes, one to strengthen the capacity of the network to cope with future demand and one to replace the existing water main along this stretch of Nine Mile Ride.
The current pipe has come to the end of its working life and needs to be replaced, allowing us to secure tap water supplies in the future.
Once again, we are sorry for any disruption this vital project may cause and we are grateful for the patience shown by motorists and our customers.
16 December 2019
The second phase of our project to install more than three kilometres of water main is nearing completion.
Our contractor, Clancy Docwra, has laid pipe from Finchampstead Road, through Billing Avenue and Gorse Ride South and along Nine Mile Ride, up to the junction of California Country Park.
The new water main will help us ensure we can continue to supply you with drinking water as the community grows.
Nine Mile Ride remains closed, however the closure is due to be temporarily between 20th December and 6th January. This two-week break will help minimise disruption over the busy festive period and has been agreed by Wokingham Borough Council.
The same dates also apply to the road closure in White Horse Lane.
Once we return to site in January, we will begin the third and final phase of this £1.4 million project.
Nine Mile Ride will be closed from the junction of California Country Park to the junction of Park Lane and our clearly-signed diversion route will be in place.
Our contractor will continue laying pipe along Nine Mile Ride while also replacing an older, burst-prone water main in the same area.
15 November 2019
Our £1.4million project to install more than three kilometres of water main in Finchampstead, Wokingham, continues to make good progress.
Clancy Docwra, our contractor, has laid more than a kilometre of pipe so far. The project began in Finchampstead Road and the new pipe runs along Billing Avenue, Gorse Ride South and onto Nine Mile Ride.
Work on Nine Mile Ride itself started in September, at the junction of Gorse Ride South.
We have moved quickly and our working area is now past the junction of Manor Park Drive, meaning we are nearing the end of the first phase of the project.
Our road closure remains in place in Nine Mile Ride in order for us to protect motorists and pedestrians from our construction area.
1 November 2019
Our road closure will be moved on Monday, November 4 and will begin beyond the junction of Manor Park Drive and Nine Mile Ride.
We anticipate this will be done around midday and residents' access routes will change once complete.
Therefore, residents will need to access their properties from the Finchampstead Road end of Nine Mile Ride, not the Park Lane End. Nine Mile Ride remains closed to passing traffic.
Our contractor has now laid a total of 972 metres of water pipe and the scheme continues to make good progress.
18 October 2019
The scheme is making good progress and the new pipe is now approaching the junction of Nine Mile Ride and Manor Park Drive.
Following discussions with Wokingham Borough Council, three-way temporary traffic lights will be in place at the junction of Nine Mile Ride and Manor Park Drive from tomorrow (Saturday, October 18).
The lights will be in place for approximately three weeks and while we are sorry for any disruption this may cause, it is vital that we protect motorists and pedestrians from our working area.
From Monday, November 11, SGN will be carrying out work to replace a gas pressure monitor at the junction of Manor Park Drive and Nine Mile Ride.
It was agreed by Wokingham Borough Council this work should be done while Nine Mile Ride is closed in order to prevent future disruption to residents.
Work will be carried out within the verge and will take approximately four weeks to complete. It will not begin until our working area has moved beyond the junction of Manor Park Drive.
14 October 2019
Our Customer Liason Manager will be on-site on Thursday, October 17, between 10.30am and 1pm. Please pop along and see us if you have any questions about the ongoing work.
7 October 2019
Our work continues to make good progress and we’ve laid more than 800 metres of pipe so far. We’re also ready to move the road closure for the first time.
The closure will be moved from the junction of Nine Mile Ride and Gorse Ride South to just before Stepping Stones Day Nursery from today, October 9.
Nine Mile Ride remains closed to through traffic but residents living between Gorse Ride South and Stepping Stones Day Nursery will see their access point changed.
We’re really sorry for any disruption the road closure may course but it is essential to protect pedestrians, motorists and our contractor.
2 October 2019
We want to do everything we can to support the community and we recently accepted a request from a local, independent filmmaker to carry out some filming while the road is closed.
High Rise Productions will be working in Nine Mile Ride, close to the junction of California Country Park on Friday, October 4 between 7pm and 10pm. Filming will only take place for one hour during that time and will not be carried out within South East Water’s working area.
Our crew will make the junction of Nine Mile Ride and Gorse Ride South safe for access for any residents who live along Nine Mile Ride, between the junction of Gorse Ride South and California Country Park.
This will be done using temporary road plates which can be placed on the road, allowing cars to drive over while our working area is closed. It would not be possible if our crew were working on-site at the same time.
Due to the location of where our pipe needs to be laid, and in order to protect the public, it would not be safe for us to fully open the road to through traffic.
Once again we are very sorry for any disruption this vital £1.4 million project may cause and we are grateful for your patience.
13 September 2019
The footpath between Finchampstead Road and Billing Avenue is now reopened. We are sorry for any disruption the closure caused but it was essential in order to protect pedestrians and our contractor.
6 September 2019
Our work continues to make good progress and our contractor has now laid more than 300 metres of pipe. Finchampstead Road is now open and the road closure has moved to the junction of Gorse Ride South of Nine Mile Ride. Our contractor has continued work in the footpath between Finchampstead Road and Billing Avenue and this will reopen at the end of next week.
Meanwhile, have been monitoring traffic concerns and due to safety reasons, White Horse Lane will be closed from Monday September 9. We are sorry for any disruption this may cause.
We would ask that all motorists stick to our official diversion route, which is clearly signed throughout.
3 September 2019
We’re really sorry for any disruption our road closure in Finchampstead causes but we must prioritise the safety of pedestrians and motorists. We would urge all motorists to stick to our diversion route at all times. Our project team will review traffic in the area as the project continues.
30 August 2019
The project continues to make good progress and our work in Finchampstead Road is nearing completion.
Nine Mile Ride will be closed from the junction of Gorse Ride South towards California Country Park from Monday and the road closure at Finchampstead Road will be removed.
Our Customer Liaison Manager will be available on-site at Nine Mile Ride on Monday afternoon from 4pm should customers wish to ask any questions about the project.
We would like to thank customers once again for their continued patience during these vital works.
23 August 2019
We have continued to make positive progress and our contractor has now laid more than 240 metres of new water main in Finchampstead Road and Gorse Ride South.
All of the pipe in Finchampstead Road has been laid and we carried out an overnight connection on Thursday, August 22. We will now begin restoring the road to its original state.
New pipe has also been laid in the alleyway between Finchampstead Road and Billing Avenue.
9 August 2019
Our £1.4 million project is off to a good start and our contractor is currently working ahead of schedule. We have laid 120 metres of pipe so far and all of the pipe in Finchampstead Road is installed and ready to be tested.
Once work the work in Finchampstead Road is complete, our contractor will move into the footpath near California Rate Payers’ Hall.
The three-way traffic lights at the junction of Nine Mile Ride and Gorse Ride South will be removed on Saturday (August 10) and four-way lights will then be in operation at the junction of Gorse Ride South, Billing Avenue and Kelsey Avenue.
The first connection to our existing network is complete and further connections are planned overnight on August 19 and 22. The connections are carefully planned in order to minimise disruption to the network and affected customers will receive letters from our project team.
5 August 2019
Our work in Finchampstead has begun and we’re currently in the process of laying new pipe in Finchampstead Road and Gorse Ride South. Temporary traffic lights have been set up at the junction Gorse Ride South and Nine Mile Ride and a road closure is in place in Finchampstead Road.
On Wednesday, we’ll be carrying out a planned connection meaning residents may experience no water or low water pressure between 10pm and 1am on Thursday. We’re carrying out this work at night to minimise the disruption to our network and customers so there may be some noise disturbance but our contractor will work as quietly as possible. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this causes and thank you for your patience while we carry out this vital work.
25 July 2019
Our contractor began preparing the area for our work on Wednesday and preparations are ongoing. We’re currently marking out a route for the new pipeline soon be in a position to start digging trenches in order for us to pass the pipe through.
During the preparation phase, our contractor may not always be visible on-site due to having to transport materials from other areas.
7 June 2019
On Monday, June 10, we’ll be carrying out some tree clearance as part of this vital scheme.
We will do everything we can to minimise the impact on the environment but due to the location where we need to install the new water pipe, a small number of trees and shrubs in the land between Finchampstead Road and Billing Avenue need to be removed.
The tree felling has been approved by Wokingham Borough Council and access along the footpath by California Rate Payers’ Hall will be maintained although there may be a small wait if works need a section clear at that time. We’re sorry for any inconvenience this work may cause.
